My name is Musema Kedir Usman, and I teach information technology at the Medhane-Alem School in Yetebon. As a child, I attended this school from kindergarten through 12th grade. I remember being barefoot when I initially started at the school, and they gave me new shoes to wear each year, which made the walk to and from school much easier. I really enjoyed learning, and with the guidance of my teachers, my grades allowed me the opportunity to attend university.
I began attending Wollo University's Kombolcha Institute of Technology in 2006 and completed my studies there in 2009. I felt so proud to be one of the first in my family and community to receive a higher education. After graduation, I decided to move back to Yetebon to become a teacher at the same school that gave me so many opportunities. I enjoy teaching because it allows me to continue learning every day.
During my time teaching at the Medhane-Alem School, I recently took part in teacher training focused on Evidence-Based Teaching. I have benefited more from it than from the knowledge I acquired in college. Since this training, I have created evidence-based teaching plans and have noticed a shift in how my students and I communicate. By following these plans, my students are more eager to learn.
I am hopeful that every student performs well on the national examination and perhaps even becomes eligible for university. I’d like to play a role in opening opportunities for my students in the same way that my teachers at the Medhane-Alem School did for me. For as long as I can, I shall be pleased to teach and serve.
