Cheru Tulu, a midwife nurse, welcomes an expectant mother to the Glenn Charles Olsen Memorial Primary Hospital. On a busy day, he will deliver an average of 2-3 healthy babies, which is a remarkable feat in a country where the infant mortality rate is 5.39 times that of the US.
The mother, in her second trimester, has committed to regular checkups. These checkups are a staple at the hospital for many patients throughout the pregnancy and post-delivery. Because of this, the hospital has had over 500 successful births.
"I am happy that our care ensures the well-being of the mother and child and has contributed to zero infant mortality rate," he says.
